2017 Ford Focus RS review with video

The basics:

The basics: Base price: $48,418 + taxes
As tested: $49,413 + taxes
Average fuel economy during road testing: 11.7 L/100 kms (20 US MPG) Competition: Subaru WRX STI, VW Golf R

For decades now, Ford has sculpted a small batch of nutty cars from its typical vehicle line-up and given them the RS stamp. It’s a niche, track-ready product that the company has become famous for. Now, all high-powered performance oriented Ford vehicles have been brought under the Ford Performance banner, including the all new Raptor pick-up truck that we tested last week. At the same time as our Raptor test on the ice at Mecaglisse raceway in Quebec, we also got a chance to put the latest Focus RS through its paces. And while it can haul kids in the back seat or handle a trip to Costco, let there be no doubt, this is not your typical Ford Focus. I think I’m in love! Take a look at the video above for our full review and then take a look at our bullet form take on this sport tuned performer.

Family Wheels report card:

Family Wheels driver comfort score: 3.5/5
(comfortable sport seats but a very harsh ride)
Family Wheels interior layout score: 4/5
Family Wheels infotainment system score: 4/5
(Canadian models come with Sync 3 and navigation standard)
Family Wheels interior noise score: 3/5
(69 dB at 100 kms/h)
Family Wheels performance score: 5/5
(just watch the video. I couldn’t wipe the grin off my face)
Family Wheels rear passenger score: 2.5/5
(it’s a squeeze but manageable for front facing car seats or shorter adults)
Family Wheels trunk test score: 3.5/5 (you may still be able to fit the family dog or lay the seats flat but the trunk is small)
Family Wheels fuel economy score: 3.5/5
(11.7 L/100 kms is thirsty for a small hatch but really good for a car with this much performance)
Family Wheels build quality score: 4/5
(generally good but some cheap plastics in the interior make it feel a bit too much like the every day Focus in places)
Family Wheels value score: 4/5
($48,000 might seem like a lot for a Ford hatch. But get behind the wheel and you’ll be amazed what it can do for the price)

Family Wheels overall score: 37/50= 74%
